LETTER from Mark Langabeer, Newton Abbot Labour Party, personal capacity

It’s my view that the current crises of British Capitalism is reflected through the prism of Brexit. In a Panorama special, TV presenter Adrian Chiles, asks whether MPs are putting party politics before the national interests.

The problem with this line of enquiry is that the ‘national interest’ means different things to different people. From a socialist standpoint, the interests of the bosses and workers are not mutual and this is reflected in the political arena. The Tories are largely funded by big companies and Labour by the trade unions.

In my opinion, the most likely perspective in the coming years are splits within both parties. The Tory Brexiteers would emerge as victors in an election contest within the Tory Party. This would provoke a split with the pro-European wing. They would have the backing of big business, Liberals and a sizeable number of Labour’s right-wing, who share this mythical belief in a national interest.

It’s not the case that Parliament is entirely grid-locked over Brexit. The majority of MPs are opposed to a ‘No Deal Brexit’. Whether this will come as a result of a free vote and the suspension of article 50, or support for May’s deal is open to debate. Either way, the Brexit saga will continue. It’s my belief that 2019 will usher in a General Election and a Labour Government.
