Boris Johnson is in a trap of his own making

LETTER by Mark Langabeer, Newton Abbot Labour Party member

The Tories are in a trap of their own making. Johnson’s strategy of leaving the EU, come what may, on the 31st Oct is in all probability, likely to lead to a Corbyn lead caretaker Government. The only hope for Johnson and Co is if the EU yield on the issue of the Irish backstop. So far, the evidence suggests otherwise. All that nonsense about the EU needing Britain as much as Britain needs the EU is now in tatters. The only option left is a no deal Brexit which Parliament has ruled out.

Johnson has stated that he would rather ‘die in a ditch’ than extend the date of leaving the EU, with or without a deal. Johnson is a gambler who is on a losing streak. His decision to withdraw the whip of 20 or more Tory MPs means that they are more likely to support some form of alternative government. The calling of a general election, in the belief that they have public support has been scuppered due to the fixed term Parliament Act that requires a two thirds majority of MPs to back it.

The decision of Labour to abstain on the issue of a general election was in my view correct because it meant that Johnson could force the UK to leave without a deal and that would harm the interests of working people. Only a caretaker Government under Corbyn can the Brexit mess  be sorted out. Then Labour can call an election, taking on the Little Englanders by campaigning for Socialist policies.
